To Manage and direct the operation of a school district police department responsible for the protection of students, staff, faculty, and visitors, , prevention of loss or damage to school district property and the prevention and investigation of crime. Serves as liaison with other local, state andfederal law enforcement agencies. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 1. Plan, organize, implement and direct all activities of the School District Police Department. 2. Inform the Superintendent of Schools and the Executive Director of District Services of all serious and/or emergency situations as directed or required by law. 3. Develop administrative/regulatory guidelines for departmental staff which establishes the conduct, methods, and procedures which will help promote the efficiency and effectiveness of safety and security initiatives within approved legal parameters. 4. Prepare and administer the School District Police Departments budget. 5. Ensure that all current and future police personnel meet and maintain state, local, and federal mandates and certifications. 6. Maintain the GCIC (Georgia Crime Information Center) records- keeping system in compliance with Federal and State laws. 7. Direct and assist in preparing work schedules, assignments, and training programs for both sworn and civilian departmental staff. 8. Conduct annual performance evaluations of departmental personnel and recommend changes to job descriptions as necessary to the Human Resources Department. 9. Perform and promote all activities in compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies and regulations. 10. Work closely with central office and school- based staff in the development, design, coordination and implementation of innovative and preventive security programs and strategies utilizing technology when appropriate. 11. Work with school- based staff and local and state law enforcement agencies to reduce and /or prevent drugs, weapons and gangs in schools. 12. Coordinate with the Human Resource Department to implement and maintain an effective process for conducting criminal background checks of all perspective employees as required by state law. 13. Implement and maintain an effective security system that when utilized, will provide intrusion, surveillance, and fire protection in all school district facilities.14. Ensure that state mandated security plans are implemented and revised annually. 15. Maintain a communication system that will provide intra and inter-operability among users. 16. Provide assistance to school district personnel on matters that may require administrative investigation of employees. 17. Interpret law, policies, rules or regulations and make decisions when requested by subordinates in the department and/or other school district personnel.18. Make presentations to schools, classes, clubs and other organizations on safety, law enforcement and other topics related to the School District Police Department; perform public and media relations duties as necessary; act as a liaison with media agencies and district Public Relations regarding issues concerning the School District Police Department.19. Supervise and coordinate security at all regular and agenda setting meetings of the School Board and other events as directed.20. Make arrest (s) in emergency and necessary situations as authorized by state law.21. Assist with applications for grants to support the School District Police Department and related BOE programs. 22. Interact with community-based and school-based organizations such as the PTO and PAB to ensure that the School District Police Department is accessible and responsive to community issues, problems and concerns regarding the safety of students and staff.23. Utilize information obtained through networking to improve the performance of the School District Police Department.24. Review current developments, literature, and technical sources of information related to job responsibility.25. Participate in training programs to enhance skills and proficiency related to job assignment as required by state law to maintain certification.26. Adhere to federal and state laws, as well as board policies and regulations.27. Perform other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Educationo Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice, Police Administration, Law Enforcement or a related field. Experienceo A minimum of five years in law enforcement with at least two years of supervisory experience. o Prior law enforcement training. Licenses/Certificates o P.O.S.T. (Peace Officers Standards and Training) certification. o Must possess a valid Georgia drivers license.
